World’s End, 4 High Street, Royal Mile, Edinburgh EH1 1TB (t:0131 556 3628)
A word of warning. This is undoubtedly an atmospheric watering hole but not at 6pm on a Saturday night. It may be great for the pub’s takings but getting a seat, being served – despite the best efforts of the hard-working staff – and being able to hear your companions is difficult.
That said, it is a couthy wee boozer with a lot going for it. It is also conveniently placed for meeting people.
The restaurant area was packed and the clientele naturally included tourists as this pub is in Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile.
The beer selection was adequate – I don’t care for Belhaven Best – so I plumped for Bitter and Twisted, an English Pale Ale, from Harviestoun Brewery. The brewery describe it as being “the connoisseurs’ session beer par excellence”. For me, it lacked bite.
It’s taken me 35 years to step inside the World’s End. I would go back, but not on a Saturday night.
