The Orange Tree has a stack of awards to its name including Norfolk Dining Pub of the Year and a winner of The Great British Seafood Pub Chef of the Year. Eat Out Magazine say it is one of the top 20 dining pubs in the UK and it is stylish and comfortable. The family-owned business sits in the heart of one of North Norfolk’s most atmospheric villages, Thornham. However, there are flaws. We picked the restaurant – popping in at lunchtime to book – as it said it could cope with diners with an allergy to gluten. When we ordered we were told: “We have to have prior notice.” Pity nobody had told us at the point of booking. Oh, my bill arrived with two extra items on it. The error was admitted but it left a sour taste. Little things mean a lot at the top level and, sadly, The Orange Tree failed to deliver consistently.
