WE’RE on location – smart word – in Colchester and in need of a bite to eat. The Lemon Tree was recommended and there it was so in we strolled. Interesting place with part of the Roman Wall in the premises. The varied and eclectic menu was also intriguing. As we were looking at the menu, fresh bread with balsamic and oil, plus some delicious olives, were served. Laura plumped for roasted Mediterranean vegetable risotto with Parmesan cheese served with side a salad. That was one of several vegetarian, main-course offerings. I plumped for the soup of the day, carrot and curry. Intriguing taste and piping hot. Iain selected crab, chilli and ginger linguini served with a rocket and Parmesan sauce. It was complimented on. As for mains, Iain and I were like minded. The local lamb casserole with basil and garlic mash looked ideal – and it was. The dish was packed with flavour. Indeed, it trumped a similar offering I’d received in a well-recommended Turkish restaurant near central London. The comfortable surroundings and slick service added to the experience and this bistro, on a midweek day, was busy. A sign of quality. It is.
