I’m old enough to remember Scottish golfer Sam Torrance sinking his 22-foot putt on the 18th hole of the Brabazon Course to beat American star Andy North one up to win the 26th Ryder Cup in September 1985.
It was my third visit to the award-winning hotel minutes from Junction 2 on the M6 Toll Road and memories of that historic golfing day flooded back as we strolled down towards the final green on a glorious Sunday afternoon.
The stop over was on a drive from Edinburgh to Bristol and it was ideal, particularly as the resort offered a Sunday evening package including wine in the superior, garden room overlooking the golf courses, buffet dinner and breakfast, use of the spa as part of the overnight stay.
We were also tempted by their website which features an eye-catching video.
The receptionist verbally offered a garden room overlooking the golf courses when we booked by telephone.
That unexpectedly changed on check-in, a disappointment, but we did were moved to a first-floor superior with a communal balcony.
However, there were only three chairs for a number of rooms. The balcony also had weeds growing and the unpleasant site of cigarette buts at various locations. Not ideal.
The net curtains in the room had seen better days and there were traces of dust above the bedhead and pictures.
Saying that, the well-appointed room had two double beds and they were so comfortable. It was also quiet and the wi-fi was easy to get into.
The extensive buffet in the spacious Ryder Grill had enough to satisfy all tastes, in my view, and the slick staff also catered for those with dietry problems.
Diner boasted a great fish selection – try the gravlax, it was superb – a tasty soup and a varied selection of fish and meat. The sweets were tempting too.
Breakfast was also a breeze with ample to pick from and, once again, it was an easy operation despite the hotel being packed.
We’d have no hesitation in enjoying another break at The Belfry, particularly a Sunday package, but would appreciate the booking not being changed at the last minute.
