The Auchans restaurant-bar in the shadow of 14th-century Dundonald Castle is the second establishment run by the Kerr family, the Waterfront at Ayr being the other. The Dundonald outlet is a pleasure to be in.
A recent makeover has created a relaxed and cosy environment. Quite simply, you feel at home and incorporating the original stone walls in the restaurant is an outstanding feature.
Work by local photographers adds to the overall feel, but what about the menu? It is extensive but my eyes were drawn to the mussels which come in a variety of sauces.
I could not resist spicy tomato and this was sensational. It was a substantial serving and every last drop of the delicious sauce was devoured. The crispy garlic bread added to the flavour and my only disappointment was there there was only one slice.
However, I’ll be back and there are no prizes for guessing what I’ll be ordering.
