Cocktails have always been a bit of a mystery to me. I’m more a red wine or real ale man myself, but Spirits Distilled opened my eyes.
Bartenders are like chefs, they need to know ingredients, and this publication provides a comprehensive insight into the art. It begins with the principles and goes on to explore history, making and different styles of the likes of vodka, gin, tequila, rum, brandy, liqueursa nd flavoured white spirits.
I found this invaluable as a consumer, particularly the whisky section which also delves into Japanese, Canadian and American tipples. The author Mark Ridgewell has worked with famous brands and with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust to create The Level 2 Award in Spirits which is a recognised qualification.
So, if you like cocktails and want to know more this could be the book for you. The price is £19.99 from Infinite Ideas (www.infideas.com)
