Peanut butter sales are up by nearly a fifth and are set to break through the £100m barrier this year, according to industry experts.

And, a new study, indicates that the nut butter could have benefits way beyond being a treat.

Researchers at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health looked into the nut consumption of 25,394 men and over 100,000 women.

Those participating filled in food frequency questionnaires every four years. The scientists found that by replacing less nutritional foods with a 28g serving of nuts, people had a lower risk of weight gain and obesity over the four-year follow-up intervals.

Specifically, they found that replacing a serving of red meat, processed meat, fries, desserts, or potato chips with a serving of nuts correlated with significantly less weight gain in the long run.

Whilst people often see nuts as food items high in fat and calories, they are, in fact, an option for those looking to avoid weight gain.
