This busy Premier Inn does what is says on the can. My room (which was tucked away and didn’t have a river or dock view which was a disappointment) provided me with a good night’s sleep, the wi-fi worked, the shower provided hot water and the breakfast area overlooked the atmospheric Albert Dock. What’s more, this 19th century, Grade 1 listed hotel make it an ideal base to explore the local attractions including the Liverpool One shopping centre, Tate Art Gallery and the Beatles Story. There are drawbacks. Parking. Rock up with your car to the front door and you then fight for a parking space or go to the nearby multi-storey which means a long detour. Then you have a walk from there – in the pouring rain and driving wind in my case – with your cases. I’ve now stayed in three of the sensitively converted hotels in the dock area and they retain their character. That could mean a long walk to your room from reception but for value this was hard to beat and nobody could blame the staff for my 45-minute wait at reception for my room at 3.30pm. The high wind had put them behind. Why? It set the fire alarms off.
