Patzeria Family and Friends, 311 West 48th Street, New York 10002
Let’s not beat about the bush. Sometimes you happen upon a restaurant and you love it. That’s what happened here.
It was right next to our hotel. We passed it every day and the sadness was that we only savoured the food on our last night.
This pizza, pasta, bar, grill – which serves breakfast from 7am to noon – is a must if you like good Italian food.
Joe Azzolino opened four years ago and it is packed every night. He has regulars but on the night we visited it was full of tourists. And you know what, Joe tries to get to every table for a chat.
The food? My sea bass with vegetables and a divine sauce with hints of garlic in the delicious wine sauce which added to the soft taste of the fish which was perfectly cooked.
Pam’s chicken special was so good we – shouldn’t admit it – mopped up the tomato-based sauce which accompanied it with a spoon, it was that good. The chef, not surprisingly, declined to provide the recipe.
And the strawberry cheesecake was a triumph, moist, packed with flavour and a superb texture.
Our waiter Alan was full of knowledge about the menu and what was best to accompany the dish. In all, I just wish Patzeria Family and Friends had a branch in Edinburgh and I’m determined to spread the word about the quality of this establishment.
