THIS 17th century pub has been reborn and the owners deserve compliments for the concept. They have created a Mediterranean-style restaurant and it is proving a massive hit, not just with locals. Mezze is situated near the heart of Downend, on the outskirts of Bristol. It is minutes from the motorway and caters for all tastes. We went on a Sunday at tea-time and loved it. My slow cook rib of beef with horseradish mash, buttered carrots, fine beans and a port and red win sauce was a triumph. Everybody had a taste and loved it. Pam’s chargrilled loin of pork with flat mushrooms filled with cream, creamed potatoes, wilted spinach and cider sauce was packed with flavour. And the chargrilled Harissa swordfish on crushed new potatoes with wilted greens and a tomato and fresh herb salad (gluten free, by the way) was also praised. Yes, we did have room for sweet. I was intrigued by the home-made house special, pistachio baklava infused with stem ginger and honey and Turkish delight ice cream. The Turkish ice cream was sublime. Frankly, the baklava did not go but, after a glug of Doombar ale, the baklava on its own was special. So, overall, this is a must visit if you are in the area.
