We were peckish but, if you are in a new part of the world, then picking a location to eat can be hazardous. Mae Gaew came into view. If we had asked then it is likely we would have been told that this restaurant has a reputation – a good one. It is Thai and they claim it is authentic. They also claim it is modern. Well, no. Stylish? Again, no. Opulent? That depends on your viewpoint. Welcoming, yes, and we were ushered to a table near the window providing a pleasant outlook on the world. Leafy, up-market Knutsford is a place to be and the fact that a Ferrari, Lamborghini and a Bentley drove by within minutes of each other, each with a blonde in the front seat – yes, I’m not making this up – gives an indication as to the status of the town. The extensive menu made selection difficult. My companion picked jumbo soup. It was a winner, packed with fish and a wonderful mix of flavour. Onto the main. I selected stir-fried chicken with garlic and peppers (red and green) and fried rice and asked for it to be toned down. They did as they were requested and the dish had a myriad of flavours, mixing well. My dinner partner went for something a tad stronger, a curry, and he loved it. The service was slick and the advice on dishes proved spot on but we made the mistake of asking for a glass of port. It arrived with sediment floating. Black mark, several, in fact. Obviously, the residents of Knutsford prefer other beverages but they do appreciate Thai as Mae Gaew has been appreciated for several years.
