Il Padrino – Colchester

Il Padrino translates as The Godfather - was the food as intriguing as the name?

Il Padrino translates as The Godfather. There is nothing, however, sinister about this gem of a restaurant tucked away in the centre of Colchester and minutes from the castle. It is a labour of love for owner Fausto who has been head chef at some of the area’s top restaurants and recently realised his dream of owning his own. He greets regulars personally and that personal touch is transferred to the fabulous food. I picked a fish dish but what he did with it was stunning, and the taste was heaven. It was not just visually stimulating but the accompanying al dente vegetables were a treat. Fausto was brought up in Southern Italy and the vibrancy of the people shines through his food. By the way, this 70-seat restaurant – spread over three floors which preserves the intimacy – was packed midweek and that is testament to the quality.
