Hotel Kette, San Marco 2053, 30124 Venice
RATING: Food 3; Ambience 3; Service 4; Drinks 3; Accomodation 3.5; Website 3.5
You step back in time when you pull back the bronze handle on the heavy wooden door leading to a typically Venetian hall with marble floor in the Hotel Kette, only a few minutes walk from the Piazza San Marco.
This elegant, four-star hotel has 63 Venetian furnished rooms and suites, on five floors. Sadly, we were not granted a room with a canal view, instead we looked out onto a rooftop and a dreary street, but the large bed and elegant and sizeable marble bathroom were welcomed.
This 16th century building was transformed at the beginning of the 1900′s into a hotel and has been recently renovated but still retains an old-world charm aided by authentic Murano glass.
The lounge and breakfast rooms are screened from the outside world by blinds and the breakfast buffet offered an assortment of meats and cheeses plus Venetian pastries.
The staff could not have been more helpful, even preparing a sizeable bagged breakfast to allow us to catch an early flight, and they were always ready to provide advice on local restaurants and locations.
This hotel, which was highly-recommended, was ideally suited for us as a bolt hole to view Venice but the rather austere atmosphere – fashioned by the wood panelled walls, could be off-putting for some. It was relaxing and quiet, just what we needed.
