RATING: Food 1; Ambience 2.5; Service 2.5; Drink selection 3; Toilets 3; Website 3.5; Total: 15.5/30

BASICALLY, nothing much to say about The Green. It has a four-star rating but the food I received was woeful in tired-looking Jocks Bar. It is housed in this 18th-century former coaching inn near the M90 and is decorated throughout with Black Watch memorabilia. Why? The Black Watch was the local regiment in the area, recruiting mainly from Perthshire, Fife, Angus and Dundee but it ceased to exist as a Regiment, despite a strong campaign in Scotland, eight years ago. I’d been busy all morning so plumped for something substantial which, incidentally, was the most expensive main course on the extensive menu. What’s more, what can go wrong with a mixed grill? Plenty as I found out. The gammon steak was dry, the lamb chop virtually tasteless, rump steak overcooked – I was not asked how I would like it –  sausage had far too strong a herb flavour, the ribs were practically inedible and the fried egg was burned. The hotel’s own barbecue sauce did not complement the dish and the chips were appeared to be straight from a packet and had little taste. Finally, what I presumed was haggis was dry and uninviting. I was hungry so I ploughed my way through but this was one of the most disappointing meals I’ve ever had. I paid and left quickly. Adding insult to Jocks special mixed grill is listed at £15.95 on the resort website which I looked up immediately on returning home but I paid £18.95. I’ll not be back and I shudder to think what visitors for the 2014 Ryder Cup at nearby Gleneagles from around the globe thought
