Cafe Rouge, Coventry

Part of a chain but touch of elegance

Better than average, central and with good atmosphere

Cafe Rouge, 2 Belgrade Plaza, Coventry, West Midlands CV1 4AJ

RATING: Food 3.0; Ambience 3.5; Service 4.0; Drinks 3.5; Toilets (not used); Website 4.0

This is part of an extensive chain but this one has a touch of elegance. It’s ideally placed for The Belgrade Theatre (30 man-sized steps) and the centre of town. What’s more, it is big but the light and airy retro Paris design makes this an appealing place to meet. The food varies from classic French (moules marinieres and beef bourguigon to a featured dish, confit du canard) to baguettes and burgers. And it’s open for breakfast. We both plumped for Burger Angus, 7oz of meat with melted Gruyere cheese on a brioche-style bun and frites. Perfectly acceptable and the chilli sauce was interesting. The small beer selection does go Continental with Leffe Blonde and Hoegaarden. This restaurant does what it says on the tin and is so much better than some I’ve visited.
