Cromars were named the best fish and chip shop in Scotland in 2016 and 2018. We just had to try it. It is on the corner of Union Street, St Andrews and they produced the perfect union of fish and chips.
They claim it is where fish meets chips and they are right. The fish arrived steaming hot in a perfect, cripsy batter which was not greasy and the chips had just enough bite.
What was even more impressive was that place was packed with takeaway and sit-down customers. And not just with Scots were there to savour the output.
I stood in a queue with several nationalities, including Americans, and this five-year-old establishment was class. A waitress took orders from the queue and the execution was quick and efficient even if people asked for an extra after the initial order.
Nothing seemed too much trouble. Cromars use locally sourced fish and potatoes and pride themselves on quality, local produce.
Their experienced chefs work like clockwork and they are backed by a fantastic, slick, front-of-house team. Management are also good at slogans.
Try this one: “A fish a day takes the pain away.” The only pain I had was finishing the hugely satisfying portion which was piping hot despite a four minute walk back to our accommodation.
Take a bow, Cromars, you deserve the accolade and they should be applauded as the 5p bag tax goes to fishermen, the people who start the process.
