Cote – Exeter

I shy away from chains, but it was raining and I was in need. How did it fare?

EXETER Cathedral basked in a shaft of sunlight as I rounded the corner. It was approaching 5pm. I was peckish and normally shy away from chains. Cote was a handy port in a storm. The lunch and early evening menu looked appetising and the refreshingly clean look of the restaurant ticked another box. So did the price of £9.95 for two courses. Snag. I said I was lactose intolerant and my soup arrived drizzled with cream. That was careless. Sauteed cod with warm chickpeas, tomatoes, black olives and basil was my choice. The tomatoes and olives made it but the cod needed seasoning as it was a tad bland. Cote, however, provided what I wanted and the menu changes to suit the seasons. A pleasant, low-cost meal in a stunning location.
