The eventual journey to this restaurant, which I’ve passed several times recently without taking the plunge, started on a crushed commuter train heading out of Glasgow to Edinburgh. Basically, I got chatting to the person sitting next to me. I quickly came to the conclusion she knew something about food. “I’m just going home to cook some duck for tea,” was the key. So, she recommended it and boy was she right. The spacious, classy tavern and restaurant is situated in the city’s former Sheriff Court and it is an imposing, iconic, building. First impressions on walking through the door into the spacious bar were: “Wow.” The furnishings were class and so was the food. Yorkshire-born executive chef Mark Stocks has worked with TV chef Gary Rhodes and in Michelin Star rated establishments and those traits show. However, prices are value and the quality superb. My fennel and celery soup packed a real punch, Pam’s risotto was faultless, my chicken breast with coq au vin sauce was packed with flavour and Pam’s sticky toffee pudding was so, so good. The dishes were all eye-catching and, basically, we loved it. Hope the lady that tipped me off reads this as she deserves praise for the recommendation.
