Canny Man’s, Morningside Road, Edinburgh
RATING: Food (not sampled); Atmosphere 5; Service 5; Drinks 5 (big whisky gantry); Toilets 4
The Canny Man’s has a reputation which stretches far from the boundary of the festival city of Edinburgh. Celebrated TV chef, Rick Stein, is quoted on the pub’s website as saying it is “the best put in the world”. Praise indeed and I would not argue with him. I love it.
The late Watson Kerr, who ran the pub, developed The Canny Man’s into what it is today. It has a huge has reputation, not just for its Bloody Mary which is, I understand, a hangover cure. One day perhaps.
Mr Kerr’s no nonsense approach remains. The beer we sampled, I had to have a second pint of lovingly kept and beautifully poured, Timothy Taylor’s celebrated Landlord, was greatly appreciated, particularly after a 4.5 hour train trip from London.
