The Philharmonic, nicknamed The Phil, takes its name from the Philharmonic Hall opposite and it is a gem. It is lavish and ornate but has a homely feel and sinking into an arm chair with a paper and a pint is an ideal way to spend the time. The broadcast music is good too and it is no surprise that The Phil was a favourite of Beatles legend John Lennon. I sampled Liverpool Organic, locally brewed. It had a crisp, pleasing taste but the pub claims to have an unrivalled selection of fine real ales. There was no lack of choice when I visited.
